Excerpt from American Artists
American art flows not from tradition but, in a specially marked sense, from the individuality of the artist. The men who have played a constructive part in the building up of our school have in many cases received their training abroad, but have used it in a fresh, very personal manner. Royal Cortissoz was a foe of non-objective modernism, but his assessment of a wide range of painters, from older traditionalists to the early modernists like Arthur B. Davies was fair and smart. He had the benefit of seeing and knowing most of the painters that he wrote about, so this is an excellent guide to how these American painters were looked upon in Cortissoz' time, from roughly 1890 to 1930. He was the critic for the New York Tribune, a position he held for many decades. Cortissoz was a fair-minded critic and an able writer, so all of these essays are readable.Product details
